How do you improve upon one of summer's greatest pleasures, the lazy Sunday afternoon barbecue? Just add music, friends - and cinnamon rolls.
Not just any cinnamon rolls, of course. We're talking the outrageously gooey caramel pecan cinnamon rolls of Food Network fame. In Ferndale's newest summer event, beloved family-owned bakery Humboldt Sweets is grilling up lunch - and serving it with sides of their incredible over-the-top desserts - every Sunday this summer.
It's one of few opportunities for al fresco dining in the Victorian Village (with others being the cozy enclosed patios at Lost Coast Cafe and Ferndale Pizza Company) and so far it's been wildly successful.
"We're making our own event," says Tony Pichulo, who owns Humboldt Sweets with wife and baker Tammy. "Every time we do this, it's like a holiday."
It's easy to see why. Every Sunday from noon to 2:30pm, Humboldt Sweets' charming garden patio is transformed into a festive family-friendly party for locals and tourists alike with juicy burgers and hot wings, cold beer and mimosas, live music from a rotating roster of local musicians, and a bounty of sweet treats, from decadent cakes and candies to butter-rich cookies and scones (be sure to arrive early for the best selection, as favorites tend to sell out fast). Of course, you don't have to wait until Sunday afternoon to enjoy the world-famous confections: Humboldt Sweets is open from 8am to 5pm most Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Custom cakes also available by order.
